Abstract
Methyl phenanthrene-9-carboxylate, dimethyl phenanthrene-9,10-dicarboxylate, and N,N-dimethyl phenanthrene-9-carboxaraide have been prepared directly from fluorene by a novel route. Neighboring group participation by carbomethoxy has been clearly demonstrated in the reactions of some 9,9-disubstituted fluorenes.
