Abstract
A determination has been made of the changes which occur in the infrared and proton magnetic resonance spectra of a number of olefins when they form AgBF4•2 olefinates. The data obtained indicate that: (i) asymmetric substitution at a double bond results in nonsymmetric orientation of the silver ion relative to the trigonal carbon atoms and to the plane of the pi orbital; (ii) complexing may affect the rotation about the bond between a secondary or tertiary tetrahedral carbon and a trigonal carbon in order to reduce interaction between the two olefin molecules; (iii) in the solid state, lattice restrictions can result in interaction between the two olefin molecules.
