Abstract
The shape of the Th A-line (L1 39.85 kev) has been studied at high resolution in the Chalk River β-ray spectrometer. The broadening of the line is found to be due to two effects: (1) the nuclear recoil due to the α decay preceding the 39.85-kev transition, and (2) the presence of the K-conversion line of a 115.1-kev transition in Bi212. The relative intensities of the K 115.1-kev line and the L1 39.85-kev line are (0.195 ± 0.02):1. The energy separation is 142 ± 8ev.
