Abstract
The mechanism of the Nef reaction was investigated with nitroethane-1,1-d2. The isolation of 95 mole % ethanal-1-d in 70% yield renders a mechanism proposed by Mahler untenable, but supports others submitted by van Tamelen and Thiede and by Nametkin.
