Abstract
This first report on the chromosomes of Tabanidae provides descriptions of the complements of 13 species. The numbers range from 2n = 8 to 2n = 18 with considerable morphological differences between complements having the same chromosome numbers. The 56 complements analysed averaged 67.3 μ in total length. It is suggested that the primitive number of chromosomes is 2n = 18 and that different processes of reduction have taken place in different genera.
