Abstract
The solid–liquid equilibrium between anhydrous magnesium chloride and N,N-dimethylformamide has been investigated between −58° and +97 °C, and up to 25 mole% in magnesium chloride by the techniques of thermal analysis. The following compounds and their melting points have been noted: MgCl2.12DMF, 8.7°; MgCl2.6DMF, 35.0° (incongruent); MgCl2.5DiMF, 51.0°; MgCl.4DMF, 69.0 °C. Infrared examination of some of the compounds suggests that co-ordination is through the carbonyl group.
