SYNAPTINEMAL COMPLEXES OF LILIUM TIGRINUM (TRIPLOID) SPOROCYTES

Abstract

It is reported that the synaptinemal complexes of the triploid lily, L. tigrinum, regularly have lateral elements with structural abnormalities over distances of a few microns. It is shown that no such abnormalities occur in the axial cores of unpaired homologues and it is concluded that the deformities originate during or after synapsis. It is shown that the univalent is well separated from the bivalent where the abnormalities occur, so that the single core is not directly implicated in the alterations in the lateral element. It is speculated that areas of non-homology in this segmental allotriploid may be involved.
