Abstract
The flash thermolysis of o-hydroxyacetophenone in a low pressure inert carrier occurs with an apparent rearrangement and subsequent elimination of water to yield benzofuran. A competing minor thermolytic pathway involves the elimination of the elements of acetaldehyde to yield cyclopentadienylidenecarbonyl. There appears to be little similarity between the mechanisms of the thermal and electron impact fragmentations.
