Abstract
Methyl radicals have been produced by the photolysis of acetone at 200 °C and their reaction with nitric oxide has been studied. The reaction CH3 + NO + M → CH3NO + M is shown to be third order with a rate constant of 8.8 × 10−31 cm6 molecule−2sec−1, with acetone as M. It is further shown that the nitrosomethane formed reacts with either methyl radicals or nitric oxide. The probability of reactions such as CH3CO + NO → CH3CO•NO taking place is shown.
