Abstract
The morphological effects of exposure to 16.6 mM succinate were evaluated in Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Rhizobium leguminosarum, R. lupini, R. meliloti, R. phaseoli, and R. trifolii. Strains evaluated included laboratory strains and natural isolates. Each of the strains tested showed swelling, but the degree and type of swelling varied between strains. Generally, the species which show swelling as bacteroids within nodules displayed the most swelling in succinate, and the morphology of those cells showed the greatest similarity to nodule-derived bacteroids.
