Abstract
Four species of grain aphids, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), R. maidis (Fitch), Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), and Macrosiphum avenae (Fabricius), were reared in a growth cabinet. Development and reproduction on Swan barley were observed for each species at 70 °F. When R. padi was reared on two varieties of barley at a range of constant temperatures, the optimum temperature for number of young produced in a 5-day period was 75 °F. Reproduction ceased at 45° and 100 °F, respectively. Adults of R. padi produced more young on bases of stems of barley than on leaves, up to 41 days after seeding, but the leaves were apparently more favorable as feeding sites between 41 and 61 days after seeding.
