Abstract
Paronchocerca bumpae n. sp. from the heart of Nothoprocta cinerascens (Tinamidae) of Argentina is most similar to P. straeleni but the latter species lacks a preanal median papilla, and has deirids and transverse bands of cuticular bosses on the ventral surface of the male caudal extremity. The genus Paronchocerca, reviewed and redefined herein, also contains ciconiarum, bambusicolae, helicina, mansoni, mirzai, papillata, rousseloti, and tonkinensis. P. choprai and P. sanquinis-ardea are regarded as species inquirendae. Paronchocerca is related to Cardiofilaria and Aproctella. The genera Paraprocta, Aproctoides, and Anenteronema (all monotypic) are considered of dubious status. Lerouxinema is considered a synonym of Chandlerella, resulting in the combination C. lerouxi (Singh, 1949) n. comb. Chandlerella pelecani (Chabaud and Rousselot, 1956) n. comb. is proposed for Striatofilaria pelecani. A key is given to the adequately defined genera of Splendidofilariinae known from birds.
