Abstract
Magnetic susceptibilities are reported for a number of compounds containing sulfur–oxygen bonds; the sulfur may also be bonded to organic groups or to halogen. The results are compared with earlier measurements on the phosphorus–oxygen or halogen–oxygen systems, and with other data on the sulfur–oxygen compounds which give information on the bond order. Though some trends similar to those in phosphorus–oxygen or halogen oxygen systems are noted, it does not seem to be possible to correlate the magnetic susceptibilities with the bond orders in any simple way.
