Cyclotron masses in ReO3 measured by the de Haas–van Alphen effect

Abstract

Cyclotron masses in ReO3 have been determined from the temperature dependence of the de Haas–van Alphen (dHvA) amplitude. Three frequency branches for magnetic field directions in the (110) plane were investigated. The dHvA effect was detected by the low-frequency field-modulation technique using magnetic fields between 35 and 55 kOe at temperatures below 2.172 K. Measured cyclotron mass values are in reasonable agreement with the theoretical predictions of Mattheiss calculated by the augmented plane wave (APW) method. A small frequency branch in the region of the [110] direction with a frequency of 72.0 MG and a cyclotron mass of 1.07 m0 at [110] was detected in addition to the six frequency branches in the (110) plane which were reported previously. The new branch is attributed to an electron orbit resulting from magnetic breakdown between the β and γ APW Fermi surface sheets.
