GENERIC CORRELATIONS AND CONCEPTS: CLATHRIDIUM (= GRIPHOSPHAERIA) AND SEIMATOSPORIUM (= SPOROCADUS)

Abstract

The type of Clathridium Berlese, Clathridium massarinum (Sacc.) Berlese, produces perithecia bearing unitunicate asci that have a pulvillus and amyloid ring and that contain hyalodictyospores. Cultures from ascospores established for the first time the connection with the conidial state, Seimatosporium ribisalpini (Fautrey) n. comb. The triseptate, fusoid to clavate conidia are pigmented in the central or upper three cells, without or with an apical and a basal oblique seta, and are borne on annellophores that are solitary, aggregated in acervuli, or in irregular pycnidia. The type species of Griphosphaeria von Höhnel has perithecia, asci, and annellophores like those of Clathridium massarinum with which, as Clathridium corticola (Fuckel) n. comb., it is congeneric. The species are distinguished by differences in ascospore size and septation, and in conidium size and presence or absence of setae. Seimatosporium lichenicola (Corda) n. comb, is proposed for Clathridium corticola stat. conid., which is the type of Sporocadus Corda.
