Human agency traits of university students with different coping styles

Abstract

An empirical classification of certain coping strategies from Ch. Carver’s studies is presented. Hierarchic approach to coping behavior (coping-actions, coping strategies, coping styles) was used. The sample consisted of 1 469 students. Using the method of cluster analysis, we identified productive, unproductive coping styles, as well as externally-oriented coping-style, which positively correlates with both productive and unproductive styles. The article includes analysis of personality traits and meaningfulness of life of students depending on the dominant coping-style, as well as gender-based specifics. Students with active coping as compared to students who are inactive in situations of stress or seek external help will develop subjective qualities to a greater extent: meaningfulness of life, goal setting, internal locus of control, as well as openness to new experience, the results of the study showed.
