Abstract
Vaporization modeling and experimental verification of the alloying elements that occurred during laser beam welding (LBW) of high-manganese steel were conducted. LBW using a disk laser and bead-on-plate testing was performed. Through modeling calculations at temperatures higher than 2800 K, the vapor pressure of Mn was found to be significantly larger than that of the other alloying elements. Furthermore, the vaporization flux of Mn was at least 10 times larger than that of the other alloying elements. The composition of the laser weldment was confirmed through electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and a 1.8-wt% Mn reduction was observed in the laser weldment compared with the base metal composition. The composition of the other alloying elements, such as Fe, Cr, Si, and C, in the laser weldment was similar to that in the base metal.
