Collision Avoidance Using a Single Wire Magnetic Ranging Technique at Milne Point, Alaska

Abstract

Abstract In high well density environments, wellbore collision avoidance typically requires creative trajectory planning, carefully executed directional drilling and rigorous downhole surveying. In exceptionally congested developments, these techniques alone may prove inadequate for accessing certain targets without violating close-approach policies. In Alaska, an adaptation of magnetic ranging technology originally developed for relief well drilling provides a safe, cost-effective alternative for drilling through such congestion.
