Abstract
Abstract
Economic efficiency in today's oil and gas industry requires careful consideration of all horizontal openhole completion criteria during the completion design stage. This paper will review the scenarios that can limit the success of openhole horizontal completions and will focus on problems inherent to sand-producing reservoirs and their management using 1) prepack screens available today and new screen design innovations, 2) recent 90-degree short- and long-radius screen bend tests that determine flexibility characteristics, 3) mechanical fluid-loss control systems, 4) circulation options available to the operator for openhole cleaning 5) and new innovations in zonal isolation with sliding sleeve circulation devices that address sanding problems.
Case histories of several unique completions that proved to be successful in controlling premature water breakthrough and sand problems in fractured reservoirs will be presented, followed by a summary of the important considerations for openhole horizontal completion design.
Introduction
To design an openhole horizontal completion, an operator must address a unique set of downhole conditions and problems that can occur during the final stages of the completion. These problems, which can include frictional drag, screen plugging, openhole cleaning, key seating, and fluid loss, are particularly inherent to horizontal completions and can limit the production potential of the well. By incorporating new screen enhancements, mechanical fluid-loss control systems, and improved running procedures into the completion design, the operator can plan for effective management of these problems as well as increase productivity potential in reservoirs that tend to produce sand. The new designs also offer a more positive approach to fluid loss prevention during the completion process and provide more efficient hole-cleaning techniques and running procedures.
This paper will provide an in-depth discussion of new screen technology, mechanical fluid-loss control, and installation techniques that are specific to better operator management of the problems normally encountered in the final stages of horizontal openhole completions. Case histories that illustrate the benefits of these new tools and completion techniques will also be discussed. It is interesting to note that in the case histories the use of horizontal technology is considered as a method within itself for controlling sand production.
Screen Types
It is important to understand that each prepack screen design offers unique performance capabilities; therefore, careful consideration must be given to the merits of each type before an appropriate selection can be made for a set of well conditions.
