Abstract
Abstract
Torque and drag minimisation is becoming increasingly important, due to the need to drill more challenging wells and because of tighter legislations restricting the use of highly lubricating oil based and synthetic based drilling fluids. This review compares different mechanical and chemical methods of torque and drag reduction, with reference to field experiences. Results obtained from a new lubricity rig are discussed. These indicate that a wide range of lubricant types can be effective in water based muds. Therefore, lubricant choice needs to be largely based on cost and availability considerations. The rig is found to be suitable for evaluating solid lubricants such as beads, and these are shown to be effective in silicate based fluids.
