Abstract
Directly modulated semiconductor lasers exhibit a dynamic frequency shift (chirp) which limits the performance of fiber-optical systems using dispersive fibers. This chirp is due to a carrier induced change in the refractive index. Both theoretical [1] and experimental [2] investigations show that the change in refractive index of the guided mode varies linearly with the optical confinement factor.
