Abstract
The resonant nonlinear refractive indices of important IR-active, minor
air constituents at mid-IR and long-wave IR wavelengths were measured
using a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. Measurements in
H
2
O
vapor were performed near 2.94, 9.3,
and 10.2 µm wavelengths, and measurements in
C
O
2
and CO gas were performed near
9.3 µm. These measurements suggest that the nonlinearity of air can be
greatly increased for relatively narrowband mid-IR and long-wave IR
laser pulses.
