Abstract
The design and optimization of guided-wave devices in LiNbO3 has been greatly enhanced by the use of numerical techniques in the calculation of optical guided modes, electric fields due to electrodes, and optical interactions in various devices. However, the agreement between theoretical and experimental device performance will remain qualitative until an accurate determination of the various input parameters, such as those describing the index profile, can be obtained. Most laboratories rely on computer modeling to design and optimize devices but lack the ability to calibrate the index profile produced by their specific fabrication processes.
