Abstract
An unifocal ophthalmic lens is an optical system, in which image formation follows the same rules just as in classical optical design applied to zooms or telescopes.
The geometrical model is sufficient, in most cases, for predicting the images, so the designer has to cope with classical chromatic and geometric aberrations.
We will describe the philosophy of the modern software tools for automatic optical design by optimization, which are the unique way to design complex aspheric modern lenses.
