Abstract
Substantial theoretical work has been done in the area of gradient-index filters since Jacobsson's original paper in 19661-18. In 1982, the term rugate (from the Latin, rugatus meaning wrinkled) filter was coined by the Air Force Materials Directorate to describe a particular class of gradient-index filters, namely multiple, superimposed, sinusiodally varying refractive index profiles. This paper will present various experimental aspects of rugate filter fabrication and show examples of fabricated filters.
