Abstract
Objective: The present retrospective research aims to investigate the effect of sex and age on radiomorphometric indices that enable the evaluation of changes in the mandible in elderly and middle-aged edentulous individuals.
Materials-Methods: One hundred twenty-eight edentulous individuals (64 females, 64 males) aged 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, and 75-84 years were divided into four age groups. The mental index (MI), panoramic mandibular index (PMI), mandibular cortical index (MCI), and alveolar ridge resorption degree in the premolar regions (M/M ratio) of these individuals were assessed with regard to age and sex on panoramic radiographs.
Results: A significant increase was detected in the MCI class with increasing age (p0.05). MI and PMI values in middle-aged and elderly individuals were affected by sex, and these values were found to be lower in females (p0.05).
