Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of thanatological theme in Donna Tartt’s novel “The Secret History” – the writer’s literary debut. The novel is created in the genre of campus novel. The phenomenon of campus novel is connected with the Anglo-American culture, in which the university and higher education are the main elements of modern society, as the university is the place of concentration of cultural and moral values. This article analyses the use of thanatological theme in the creation of psychological portraits of the novel's characters, and examines its influence on the development of the novel’s main themes. The phenomenon of thanatological reflection is considered. It is found that the characters are characterised by describing their attitude to death. The leitmotiv role of the after-death reflection is revealed.
