Abstract

Abstract Dislocation of the condyle of the mandible is a common condition. It may be unilateral or bilateral and can be acute, recurrent and rarely chronic. Dislocation can occur in any direction, with anterior dislocation being the most common. Acute mandibular dislocation is defined as displacement of the mandibular condyle anterior to the articular eminence, causing complete separation of articulating surfaces and fixation in that position. The event is painful and distressing for the patient and their family and poses quite a challenge to the dental team addressing it.
