Bilateral uremic optic neuropathy in a patient with chronic kidney disease

Abstract

A 62-year-old man with chronic kidney disease presented with complaints of sudden-onset painless loss of vision in both eyes for 4 days. The vision was reduced to hand movements close to the face bilaterally. A clinical examination revealed bilateral disc edema. Blood urea and serum creatinine levels were elevated. The patient was treated with systemic steroids and hemodialysis. One month following the presentation, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) had improved to 6/12, N12 in both eyes.
