Case Report of Onset of Mephentermine Use Disorder in a Middle-aged Female

Abstract

Abstract Following is a case report of a 41-year-old female who presented to the casualty of General Hospital, Psychiatry Unit of a Teaching Tertiary Care Institute with psychotic complaints. After the patient’s violent behavior was brought under control using injectable psychotropic medications in the casualty, patient’s relative disclosed a history of injection mephentermine sulfate intravenous use for the past 4 years. The patient was diagnosed with mephentermine use disorder with mephentermine-induced psychosis. She was treated for her psychosis, and motivation enhancement sessions were initiated at the hospital. Mephentermine sulfate use is increasing in the young male population of the country; however, the onset of substance use in a middle-aged female is rare. This case aims to highlight the importance of broadening the window for screening for substance use in the target populations.
