Abstract
Abstract
Background:
Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency worldwide. Diagnosing acute appendicitis can be done with the help of various scores, out of which Alvardo and Tzanakis scores is commonly used.
Aim:
The aim of this study was to assess the predictive accuracy of Alvardo and Tzanakis scores in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis
Materials and Methods:
It was a hospital-based cross-sectional study conducted over a period of 12 months from January 2021 to January 2022 on all the patients above 10 years admitted to general surgery departments with clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis who underwent emergency appendectomy after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Results:
The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and area under the curve (AUC) of Alvarado scores were 59.6%, 100%, 100%, 18.75% and 0.874, respectively, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and AUC of Tzanakis score was 87.71%, 66.66%, 98%, 22% and 0.860, respectively.
Conclusion:
Alvarado score is found to have better diagnostic accuracy than the Tzanakis score.
