Primary Malignant Solitary Fibrous Tumor of Mediastinum

Abstract

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pleura is a rare mesenchymal tumor with <800 cases reported in literature when compared to mesotheliomas – 3000 cases yearly. These arise from the noncommitted mesenchymal cells adjacent to the mesothelial cells. Benign SFTs are more common than their malignant counterparts. Here, we report two cases of successful en bloc resection of a massive mediastinal mass in a 65-year and 55-year male through left anterolateral thoracotomy. Postsurgery histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of a malignant solitary fibrous tumor. Complete resection is still considered to be the standard treatment protocol, however, close follow-up should be kept as these are prone to local recurrence.
