2. The terms “glycosido” and “glycosyl” have been used as synonyms in much of the older literature. In the present work, glycosyl will be used and will refer to the radical obtained by removal of the anomeric hydroxyl from a reducing sugar. In the present text, the number referring to the position of attachment of the glycosyl radical to the reducing residue is placed before the glycosyl radical, e.g., 4-O-ß-D-galactosyl-D-glucose. This is consistent with the usage such as D-glucose 6-benzoate, or 6-O-benzoyl-D-glucose.
