5. Shifts in zero are mainly due to fluctuations in filament voltage, as the anode voltage is sufficiently stabilised. According to Mc Farlane (loc. cit.) compensation for fluctuations in filament voltage can be obtained by the use of a resistance in one of the filament leads. The size of this resistance has to be found by a method of trial and error.
