1. This appendix lists selected books and papers in the field, as well as all publications cited in the text.
2. The order is alphabetical by author, except for reference works such as dictionaries or works without a named author which are alphabetized by title. When I order documents by title, I ignore initial articles such as “a” or “the.” For example, to find papers by Jan Walker, look under “Walker,” and to find the American Heritage Dictionary, look under “American.” A number in Arabic numerals following a journal title is the volume number of a periodical. I omit place of publication because if you know the publisher, which is given, the place is redundant.
3. You should be able to find these books and articles in a local public or institutional library. If not, consult Books in Print at a local bookstore or library for ordering information. All the publications in this list are worth examination, but if a book or paper is particularly good, I give it two checks (✓✓). Excellent books that are getting out of date have one check (✓).
