2. Tel Aviv and Jaffa were joined only in 1950, becoming Tel Aviv-Jaffa. This paper relates to the development of the old center of Tel Aviv between the years 1918, the end of World War I and 1948, the establishment of the state of Israel. The old historical center of Tel Aviv started to develop in1909 as a small suburb of Jaffa and evolved into an independent city just a few years later. The new city was developed along the Mediterranean seashore and was characterized by being a ‘Hebrew City’ mainly for Jewish residents. Today, despite the municipal definition of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Jaffa and Tel Aviv are distinctively different when one reviews the city's history, built heritage assets, urban planning, preservation and conservation processes and developments in these two parts of the city. The silicate brick phenomenon is prevalent mainly in the old historical center of Tel Aviv.
