4. The “double Schlenck tube” is H-shaped, open at both tops with inlets on the sides for argon, and with the compartments separated by sintered glass to allow filtration. Reaction is carried out in one of the arms and the solution filtered, when precipitation is complete, by transfer of solution from one arm to the other.
5. Reactions involve gas evolution (probably CH4), are exothermic and the reaction mixtures likely to be expelled from the flask at 0°C or higher temperatures.
