1. Generally, one is concerned with the effect of isotopic mass on the diffusion process. For ions, the effect of the difference in mass of the labelled and unlabelled species is very small and is not normally measurable within the precision of diffusion measurements. However there are clear differences among the self-diffusion rates of the various isotopic forms of water (e.g. HDO, HTO, H218O and H2O) and corrections have to be applied to obtain the value for normal water (H2O).
