1. The 40 parishes for Table 1 were drawn randomly from my larger data sample and uncorrected burial rates have been tabulated. Most of the urban parishes had non-conformist populations; the left-hand figures are uncorrected crude burial rates and the figures in brackets are burials per 1,000 Anglican population. Since some non-conformists may have registered their burials in the Anglican church, this correction probably overinflates the crude rates and can be treated as an upper estimate. Non-conformity was negligible in the 30 marsh and rural parishes. The crude burial rates in Figure 1 are corrected for underregistration; see: Fischer and Dobson, op. cit.
