1. In accordance with general practice, trityl will be used for the equivalent term triphenylmethyl; tritanol for triphenylmethanol; tritane for triphenylmethane; tosyl for p-tolueneaulfonyl; and mesyl for methanesulfonyl. The abbreviations Tr, Ts and Ms represent the trityl, p-tosyl and mesyl groups, respectively.
