5. There is considerable variation in the terminology used to describe autonomous vessels. The International Maritime Organisation has adopted the term Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships [MASS], whilst international lawyers have tended to discuss maritime autonomous vehicles [MAV]. This article will adopt the terminology used in discussions of naval autonomous vessels, uncrewed surface vehicle [USV] and uncrewed underwater vehicle [UUV].
