1. ANATO workshop was held at Castiglione della Pescaia, Italy, in 1983, with proceedings summarized in Willet, R.D., Gatteschi, D., Kahn, O., editors. Magneto-structural correlations in exchange coupled systems, NATO Advanced Science Institute (ASI) series C140. Dordrecht, Netherlands: Reidel; 1985. This catalyzed interest that led to a topical Symposium on Ferromagnetic and High-Spin Molecular Materials at the 197th National American Chemical Society Meeting in Fall, 1989 at Dallas, TX. This meeting could be considered the point of self-recognition for the future International Conferences on Molecule Based Magnetism (ICMM meetings). The proceedings for the Dallas meeting were published in Miller JS, Dougherty DA, editors. Mol Cryst Liq Cryst 1989; 176:1ff. A 1990 NATO Advanced Research Workshop at Il Ciocco, Italy, has been considered the second meeting focused on molecule-based magnetism. Its proceedings were summarized in Gatteschi D, Kahn O, Miller JS, Palacio F, editors. Magnetic molecular materials; NATO ASI series E198. Dordrecht, Netherlands: Kluwer; 1991. I am grateful to Prof. Christopher Landee of Clark University for refreshing my memory of these meetings. (especially the 1983 meeting, “before my time”).
