5. Due to a worldwide shortage of colchicine from which Colcemid is derived, it has been impossible lately to obtain Colcemid. Colcemid is about ten times stronger in its action on cells in cultivation than is colchicine and is less toxic in animal experiments. Colcemid has been supplied through the courtesy of the CIBA Pharmaceutical Co. in the past and is now commercially available from Calbiochem. (Dr. E. A. Shneour, Director of Research, P. O. Box 12087, San Diego, California 92112.) Although CIBA has recommended putting Colcemid into solution using ethanol, propylene glycol, and phosphates followed by autoclaving, for in vitro work we have found that Colcemid is easily dissolved in distilled water, it can be frozen in small aliquots, thawed for use, and discarded after brief storage at 5°C. It might be a better practice to filter sterilize the solution before preparing the aliquots.
