Reaction of hot solutions of hydrated scandium nitrate ( 0.05g; 0.17mmol) in 50ml MeOH with 1,10-phenanthroline ( 0.09g; 0.50mmol) in 50ml MeOH (1:2 molar ratio) afforded small colourless crystals on very slow cooling. IR (cm−1) 1538, 1522, 1510, 1035, 1017. Mass spec. m/e=734 ([M−26]+). Yield 72%. Analysis: Calculated for C26H22N8O14Sc2, C 41.07%; H 2.91%; N 14.74%; Found C 40.75%; H 2.92%; N 14.36%.

Crystal data: C13H11N4O7Sc, M=380.22, monoclinic, space group C2/c, a=14.506(3), b=16.830(3), c=13.521(3)Å, β=113.080(3)°, V=3036.8(10)Å3, T=150K, Z=8, λ (station 9.8, SRS)=0.6894Å, μ=0.533mm−1, Dc=1.663gcm−3, 8844 measured reflections, 3129 unique reflections (Rint=0.0366), 2402 observed reflections (I>2σ(I)). Final R1=0.0367 (obs), wR2=0.1020 (all data).
