Preparation of aryl aldehydes from arly methyl ketones

Abstract

Arylglyoxylic acids can be readily obtained from solid my1 methyl ketones by permanganate oxidation of the latter in pyridine solution at 15 �C. Decarboxylation of the glyoxylic acids in NN-dimethyl-p-toluidine affords good yields of the aryl aldehydes containing 1, 2, 3, and 4 aromatic rings.
