Abstract
It has been shown that the structure of
the double layer influences the reduction of zinc(II) by altering the rate and
activation energy of the electrochemical reaction ; there was no evidence that
the effective concentration of zinc(II) was different from the bulk
concentration. In perchlorate solutions, there was a direct correlation between
the activation energy of the reaction and the potential at the outer Helmholtz
plane, while in the presence of specifically adsorbed iodide ions, the
activation energy was considerably less, indicating a different and readier
reaction path for the electron transfer over an iodide " bridge ".
