Abstract
Self-condensation of cyanoacetamides under the influence of phosphorus oxychloride leads to pyridines and pyridinium salts in high
yield. The mechanism of the reaction is discussed and evidence for the
structure of the products is described. The chemical activity of the new
pyridine derivatives has been briefly explored.
