Abstract
Although the cosmopolitan genus Scaptomyza contains about 400 species, only two occur in Australia, the endemic S. australis Malloch (= 'Drosophila' biradiata Duda) and the cosmopolitan S. pallida (Zetterstedt). Redescriptions of both species are given. S. australis is widespread within Australia and exhibits a range of colour variability.
