Abstract
The response of a continental shelf to incident Poincaré waves in a homogeneous ocean rotating about a vertical axis is considered, linear friction being incorporated in the model. The shelf is shown to resonate at the usual 'quarter-wavelength' frequencies, but surprisingly, the maximum energy absorption at resonance occurs for a particular value of the relation between the friction parameter and the shelf geometry.
