Abstract
A number of experiments have been carried out which were designed to throw further light on the specificities of the "substrate" and "acceptor" centres of the ,B-glucosidase of S. atra. The type 2 activator, glycerol, has been shown to be an acceptor for a glucosyl residue transferred from p-nitrophenyl ,B-glucoside. p-Nitrophenyl 6-0-p-toluenesulphonyl-, 6-0-methyl-, and 3-0-methyl-,B-D-glucopyranosides are all substrates for the ,B-glucosidase. The implications of the observations for the theory of the action of the enzyme are discussed.
